New construction of the health station in Gope
From 2021/11/16 to 2021/12/03 we were able to travel to Nepal in spite of Corona and the associated conditions and tests. The most important point of our trip were the visits of the existing projects and the discussions with the local people about what is going well and where there are still difficulties. To everyone who has supported us over the past 24 years, we say “thank you”. We say “thank you” to a great team in Nepal, to all the people doing good work on the construction sites and in the facilities. We wish them and their families a good time and a blessed new year 2022.

After a long and arduous journey to Gope/Lohkim in the south of the Solu Khumbu, we know that through the construction of the health station something very important will change there for the population, especially for the women and girls. On site, we talked to the villagers and the local committees and inspected the progress of construction.

The Corona pandemic in Nepal has shown that minimal basic medical care is still not a matter of course in Nepal. This is especially true for the mountain population in the Himalayas. The health centres in Betang and Bhorle, which were established with your help, were expanded with little effort during the Corona pandemic to include small, effective Corona aid stations. Even lives from more distant villages could thus be saved and infections could be reduced through education.
Now we are pleased to present a new clinic construction project intended to further improve medical care.

Construction of a third health station in Gope, Solu Khumbu
Today we turn to you again with the request to support another project. The proposed third health post, Gope, is located two days’ jeep ride from Kathmandu in the Solo Khumbu district south of Mount Everest. This area is extremely remote and can be reached by motorized transport only outside the rainy season. Another goal of the very active women’s group of Gope is to establish a service of home visits for the elderly and the disabled.

Ram Kumar Tamang, NHEFoN, informed us on 08/01/2021 that the Corona situation has improved. Through your help, in Kathmandu as well as in the health stations in Betang and Bhorle, suffering could be reduced, infections could be prevented and severe courses of illness could be alleviated. Despite the difficult time, we have initiated a new project together with Ram. We will build another health station together with the population in Gope in the Solo Khumbu, 80 km beeline south of the Everest region.

The situation is getting more and more out of control, mainly because the government is taking chaotic decisions. As of May 27th, 2021, all grocery stores were to be closed for two weeks. Thanks to your very generous donations, together with NHEFoN/Ram Kumar Tamang, we can do more than we had thought. In the first step we were able to provide our families with staple foods for three months in the last days. In the second step we can, on demand from Betang-Rasuwa, initiate a far-reaching project: We are promptly setting up a Corona relief centre at the Betang Health Centre.

The situation in Nepal has become drastically worse. The reasons for this are manifold and, as so often, man-made. We are in constant contact with Ram and yesterday, based on his mail, we decided to provide our families with the most necessary food for the next three months. Our families are all dependent on their daily wages. Since there will be no work for them for the foreseeable future, there will be no money to provide the most minimal supplies.

Despite a very difficult Corona school year 2020-2021, Nepal has managed to hold the annual final exams. Lack of technical tools such as laptops, wifi and smartphones made it difficult for children and students to work through the required content. However, thanks to your donations, we were able to support the families in feeding the children and youths.

The clinic in Bhorle has now officially been opened and has received a great deal of attention from the region’s health care sector as well as from the government. In addition to the sturdy, earthquake-proof and functional building, the professional internal finishings and the high-quality, functional equipment, especially for births and paediatric care, serve as a model for the mountain regions.

Greetings from Kathmandu from our partners Maya and Ram from NHEFoN. Ram has survived the severe corona disease very well. However, he still needs time to get back to full health. Preliminary planning for 2021 has been concluded. Gecotec e.V. would like to thank you very much for the support we have received from you during this last, exceptional year. Corona emergency aid from Gecotec e.V. Germany, NB&G Switzerland and NHEFoN
Ram has asked me to inform you that his mother passed away the day before yesterday. She was cremated this morning in Kathmandu with all honours, with all the necessary rituals. Ram’s mother was a very warm and tolerant woman with great attachment to her culture and religion, but also very curious about everything concerning modern ways of life. We wish her a blessed journey and will miss her very much.

Ram is getting better every day. He was allowed to go home three days ago. Ram and Maya thank you very much for all the good wishes. Ram’s mom was a little better yesterday, but she still is in ICU. The last months have made us even more aware how much it makes sense to build another infirmary together with Ram’s association NEFoN as soon as COVID permits it.

Maya, Ram and Ram’s mother have been infected with COVID-19. The course of the disease was relatively harmless for Maya. Ram and his mother are seriously ill and are both still in the hospital. The good news is that Ram is getting better day by day. His mother’s crisis will certainly last for a long time due to her age and we hope for a full recovery.

The measures, very quickly taken by the state, are very severe. Among others, they comprise: all borders are closed. There are neither national nor international flights any more, there is a curfew, schools are closed, shops are closed. Only food may be sold. Fortunately, the building project has been finished and thus Corona did not influence the completion. We very much hope the government will now open the health station soon, so the people can obtain treatment there.

The cornerstone for the medical centre Bhorle, Rasuwa has been laid. Contrary to what had been expected, the plot concealed large rocks, just as it was the case when the first clinic in Betang was being built. For this building also manual work is necessary. With the little means these building workers require presumably nobody in Europe would be able to manage. Once foundations have been completed, all participants go home and enjoy the holidays. On December 13th work will continue with strengthened karma.

The location of the new medical centre is difficult to access in a remote valley in the southern foothills of the Himalayas. The distance from Betang where we’ve built the first medical centre in 2018, to Bhorle is about 5 hours on foot. The primary goal of the project is improvement of the health status of the population, especially of the women and girls around Bhorle. Approximately 6,000 people live in the catchment area.

It’s taking off!

On 11/1/2018 Ram will institute the building site for the new earthquake proof clinic / social centre in Bhorle Betang. That we can start building on time, we owe to Ram who in September has made his way to Bhorle defying road blockages and the extreme rainy season of 2018. The funding has been secured thanks to your steadfast support and our cooperation with the Swiss society NEPAL Bildung & Gesundheit.

Just before the summer holidays we can share good news with you: we now have obtained the full approval for the building of our village clinic in Bhorle. We are very pleased that due to new, decentralized structures the proceedings for Ram and our Nepalese architect were simpler this time than they were when building the school in 2016. The new government appears to advance decentralization.
