Now more than ever!

Construction of a third health station in Gope, Solu Khumbu

Dear sponsors and supporters,

Namaste. Now more than ever!

Today we turn to you again with the request to support another project of Gecotec e.V., DESWOS, NB&G and NHEFoN. The Corona pandemic has once again drastically shown how valuable and effective our joint projects in Nepal are.

The health centres in Betang and Bhorle in Rasuwa district have received a lot of attention with their concept up to government level. With this concept, we have closed a gap between the irregular village visits by nurses and inpatient care in district hospitals. These are often day trips away and in principle only responsible for serious cases. Our health centres take care of acute illnesses, accidents, sex education, pregnancies and births directly on site. The centres also offer training for adults and young people on health care and contraception. Vaccinations and preventive medical examinations can now take place close to home and reach almost 90% of the inhabitants - 6 days a week. The treatments are free of charge.

After completion, the government takes over the management of the health stations. It finances the nurses and is also responsible for maintenance and operation.

In addition to health protection, we are particularly concerned about children and adolescents who

  • are often confronted with alcohol problems as very young children,
  • can never address sexual abuse,
  • get married off far too early,
  • often already have children while being children themselves.

Another goal of the very active women’s group of Gope is to establish a service of home visits for the elderly and the disabled. The health station Gope could take over the training of the volunteers.

The planned third health station is located in Gope which is two days by jeep from Kathmandu in the district Solo Khumbu south of Mount Everest. This area is extremely remote and accessible by motorized vehicle only outside of the rainy season. The Gope Village Community/Health Committee heard about our activities in Rasuwa and approached Ram Kumar Tamang in the fall of 2020. Ram Kumar Tamang was born in this region and knows the structures there very well. The village community was very committed in completing all prerequisites so that a cooperation came about. Despite Corona, lockdown and heavy rains.

Construction will start in early November 2021, depending on the weather. We are in the fortunate position of being able to use local resources such as quarry stone, gravel, sand and timber from the immediate vicinity. Our young architect Madhav Regmi has already proven himself very successfully in two construction projects and will again supervise the building project directly on site together with Ram Kumar Tamang as construction manager. The craftsmen are all from the immediate vicinity.

The total costs amount to 80,000.00 €, including basic equipment. The construction costs for this building are higher than for the previous buildings. The geographical location, the difficult transport routes and 20 square meters additional construction area are the determining factors. We are particularly happy that we have always been able to stay within budget in all construction projects with NHEFoN. It goes without saying that the building will be solid and earthquake-proof. A geological analysis regarding the suitability of the site has been carried out. Completion is envisaged for mid-April 2022. For more information, please visit the project blog.

We are also in the good position of being financially supported in this project for the second time by the non-profit association DESWOS, in addition to our Swiss colleagues from NB&G. The financing gap of 20,000.00 € shall now be closed with your help.

Every donation will help, however small!

We guarantee you also this time that the donations will flow to 100% into the project and you will be informed regularly about the development.
