Corona Help for Nepal

Another lockdown across Nepal

Dear sponsors and supporters,

Namaste.

Below you find Ram Kumar Tamang’s assessment of the situation in Nepal regarding Corona. Things are developing as had been feared. The government is acting consequently with a strict lockdown, but of course the general conditions in the country are more than difficult.

The government is not supporting the people with food this time and the hospitals can no longer take in additional patients, as our doctor Samikshya Tamang reports.

In Nepal, as everywhere else, it is primarily the poor who are affected, those who cannot pay for medical care, and those whose hygienic conditions usually are catastrophic. How good that now in Rasuwa district with your help two clinics are offering free assistance.

Ram will inform us when there are specific ways in which we can help again and maybe at least make the situation easier again for the families of our sponsored school children.

A very cordial greeting,

Anne Peter, president Gecotec e.V.

Mail from Ram Kumar Tamang:

Dear Anne,

Good morning.

Well, the current situation is very bad in Nepal because Corona has risen sharply. In Kathmandu, most of the stores are closed. In Kathmandu, all hospital beds are full. Every day, on average 5 people die. Still all national and international flights are closed. Outside of Kathmandu, all public transportation is stopped. Only basic things are allowed to be transported. Travel to other districts is prohibited. It is good that our clinic was finished just in time before Corona and is now providing great help.

Well, it is also a very difficult situation for next fall for the Trekking season, because of Corona. If it fails again, countless families will lose their livelihood.

The Ministry of Education of the Nepalese government has opened the online system in all schools. All schools provide material via the Internet. However, most of our children do not have Internet connection. Only some of our children have internet connection. All schools are not allowed to open an office because of Corona. All teachers do their lessons online from home. All children participate and have already had an annual test. The children do not have to repeat the school year. Later this year we will receive an annual progress report.

So much for today.

My best regards to all supporters in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Ram
