Empowering children, supporting families

Project Day 2025 in Kathmandu

The traditional annual meeting of sponsored children in Kathmandu was once again a special moment for everyone involved – for us, for the children and young people, for their families, and for the entire NHEFoN team.

Medical Care for All – A Vital Cornerstone

A public healthcare system like the one we know in Europe does not exist in Nepal. This makes it all the more important that we provide every child and young person with a thorough health check-up each year as part of Project Day.

The encouraging news: apart from the usual dental issues, no serious illnesses were found. Only one case gives us cause for concern – a young girl is showing signs of an eating disorder and severe underweight. The NHEFoN team will continue to work closely with her family and provide further support if needed.

We are especially grateful that Dr Samikshya Tamang and her husband once again volunteered to provide medical care this year. Samikshya herself was once supported by NB&G and Gecotec and completed her medical training with our help. Today, she is passing on that gift. An impressive circle of solidarity.

Conversations, School Reports, Future Prospects

Alongside medical care, conversations with families are central. Maya and Dolma from NHEFoN have known many of the children for years. They speak with parents, aunts and uncles about the current situation at home and in school. School reports and personal impressions help identify any potential difficulties early on.

This year, one young person left the project after Year 10 without a qualification – but all the others successfully completed their academic year. That, too, is good news.

Shared Meals, Games and Dances

The annual commemorative photos have become a cherished tradition. Each child receives a photo from the previous year – a small but meaningful token of appreciation.

After the “official” part of the day, it was time to celebrate: we ate, laughed, played and danced. The children and young people proudly presented their dances, and we all enjoyed the companionship.

Education Makes a Difference – Sustainably and Across Generations

Particularly moving: many of the former sponsored children are now self-sufficient, professionally successful – and some are now working with NHEFoN or supporting other social projects. A new generation is gradually emerging – one that no longer needs support, but is ready to give back. That is exactly what we aim for.

A heartfelt thank-you to all sponsors for your loyal support!
